Senior officials from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) forcefully entered the Public Service Media (PSM) premises and disrupted its operations while the company’s Managing Director, Ahmed Shakeeb, was abroad performing the Umrah pilgrimage. The MDP representatives sought to meet with Shakeeb to voice concerns over alleged bias in the state media’s coverage of election-related information. Prior to this incident, PSM had officially informed the MDP in writing that a meeting could be scheduled upon Shakeeb’s return to the Maldives. Despite this communication, MDP members proceeded to enter the building, causing significant inconvenience to the staff and remaining on the premises for an extended period.
In response, PSM clarified that its programming is conducted by experts with the aim of raising public awareness through professional standards. The broadcaster emphasized that no political party has been granted exclusive opportunities and asserted that the company continues to operate independently within the legal framework. Furthermore, PSM’s official correspondence urged the MDP to refrain from spreading misinformation and inciting public animosity toward the institution.
