Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has today stated that Mauroof Jameel, who has been appointed as the Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), is an honest, capable, and experienced individual who worked with him. Mauroof Jameel served as the Construction Minister during Maumoon’s presidency.

During Maumoon’s administration, when Hulhumalé was being reclaimed, Mauroof worked extensively on Hulhumalé’s development as the head of the Hulhumalé Development Unit. With the establishment of HDC, he briefly held the position of CEO of the company. Mauroof Jameel’s appointment as HDC’s Managing Director comes after the resignation of Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed from the same position.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Maumoon expressed his happiness at the appointment of an honest, capable, and experienced person like Mauroof Jameel to a senior position at HDC.

Fazul resigned amid discussions of corruption issues within HDC. Documents that have been made public suggest that Fazul’s elder brother and MWSC’s Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Fazeel Rasheed received a plot despite not qualifying for the Binveriya scheme. The boundary wall of the plot he received has already been built. However, in the “Binveriya” scheme list released last August, Fazeel was included as someone who did not meet the criteria. It is clear that while Fazul’s brother was on the list of those not qualifying for the Binveriya scheme, a plot registration was made for him.

Both Fazul and Fazeel have been suspended in this case. In the case of giving plots to people not included in the “Binveriya” scheme, passports of Fazul along with 20 others have been withheld. Suspecting involvement of former government officials in the plot issue, passports of former government’s Housing Ministry’s State Minister Akram Kamaluddin, Senior Executive Director Mohamed Arif, Senior Executive Director Liurgam Waheed, and current Director General Ahmed Vishan Naseem have also been withheld.

While the police are investigating the case as a criminal matter, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is also looking into the case.
