Many Brazilian clubs boycott football election

Many clubs and famous players in Brazil have decided to boycott the election to choose a president for the Brazilian Football Confederation. Twenty clubs have decided to boycott the election scheduled for tomorrow. This includes Brazil’s two strongest clubs, Flamengo and Corinthians. In addition, former famous players who have won the World Cup for Brazil, such as Ronaldo Nazario, former captain Cafu, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, and former captain and coach Dunga, have also decided to boycott this election.

These players have called for changes to the rules of the election to choose a new president for the Brazilian Football Federation. Ronaldo’s group has also decided to meet with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to ask for his support in this matter.

After the Brazilian court removed Ednaldo, the president of the football federation of Brazil, the only country to have won the World Cup five times, two parties decided to compete in the election to choose a new president. They are Samir Zaud, president of the Roraima Football Federation, and Reinaldo Carneiro, president of the São Paulo Football Federation. Of these, it has been decided that Reinaldo does not have the opportunity to compete in the election. This is because he did not receive the support of eight federations as required by the constitution. According to the constitution of the Brazilian Football Federation, a candidate for president must obtain the support of eight federations. However, he only received the support of two federations and 21 clubs.

However, Ronaldo and others are insisting that this is not fair. They have described the requirement to obtain the support of eight federations as an obstacle for many to compete in the election. The main reason 20 clubs boycotted the election was also to protest this article. Although Ednaldo was elected for a second term as president of the football federation of Brazil, the world’s most successful football country, the Brazilian court has decided that he does not meet the conditions to remain in office due to corruption, abuse of power, forgery, and many other financial issues. However, he has decided to appeal this case.
