Senegalese forward Sadio Mane has been officially named the Player of the Tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations. The former Liverpool star, who currently plays for Saudi club Al Nassr, received the prestigious award following last night’s final. Senegal clinched the championship title by defeating Morocco, marking their second continental triumph within the last six years. Mane’s pivotal role in the journey included scoring the decisive goal against Egypt in the semi-finals.
The award for Best Goalkeeper was presented to Morocco’s Yassine Bounou, who delivered an exceptional performance with several key saves during the final. He faced stiff competition for the honor from Senegal’s Edouard Mendy.
The Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament’s top scorer, was won by Morocco’s Brahim Diaz, who netted five goals throughout the competition. Despite his individual success, Diaz missed a crucial opportunity to secure the title for his country in front of a home crowd when his extra-time penalty was saved by the goalkeeper.
Reflecting on the match, Senegalese forward Pape Gueye noted that Diaz’s missed penalty served as a turning point, allowing Senegal to regain their focus.
“I am incredibly happy. It was a very challenging match. After Morocco missed the penalty, we became more focused and improved our overall game. I was fortunate enough to score the winning goal following that moment. Scoring in a major final is an extraordinary honor. This victory means Senegal will now proudly display a second star on its jersey,” Gueye stated.
