President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of a new, modern fish market in Malé is set to proceed with grant aid from the Japanese government. The President noted that while this project initially commenced during his tenure as Mayor, it had been halted due to various reasons. This new market will be a modern, mixed-use complex, incorporating both a fish market and a vegetable market. A technical team from Japan is expected to arrive in the Maldives very soon to commence work, and the project will be implemented on the site of the current local market, as previously planned, the President added.

Furthermore, there are plans to construct a separate building on the current fish market site to provide office spaces for companies operating within the fisheries industry. The government has also revealed that to facilitate the commencement of the new market’s construction, temporary sites have been arranged for the relocation of the local market, the traveler’s market, and the dried fish market. According to the government, the Malé Fish Market will be developed into a 7-story building. This project is expected to effectively address the current space constraints and realize President Muizzu’s vision of consolidating all market services in Malé under a single roof.
