
The Maldives has won the South Asian Super Cup 2025 championship. Maldives secured the victory with an aggregate score of 4-1 over two legs against Sri Lanka. In the first leg, Maldives won with a score of 3-0. The second leg, played yesterday evening, ended in a 1-1 draw. In the match played at the Racecourse Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, Maldives displayed good performance from the start. In the fifth minute of the match, Ibrahim Mahudhee Hussain (Feydhoo Ibbe) sent a shot from outside the area that hit the crossbar.
In the 14th minute, Maldivian midfielder Ahmed Aiham had an opportunity, but his shot from inside the area was saved by Sri Lankan goalkeeper Sujan Perera. Shortly after, Maldivian fullback Haisham Hassan’s attempt was also stopped by keeper Sujan. Sri Lanka then improved their game, and in the 20th minute, their player Dillon De Silva had a good chance. However, his shot from inside the area went wide of the post. In the 32nd minute, De Silva had another attempt from inside the area, but this shot also missed the target, going wide of the post. Three minutes later, Maldivian forward Hamza Mohamed (Hampu) sent a header from inside the area that went wide. In the 38th minute, Aiham’s shot from outside the area also went wide of the post.
As the second half began, Sri Lanka continued to play well. In the 61st minute, De Silva had another opportunity for Sri Lanka. However, his shot from inside the area went wide of the post. Sri Lanka’s first shot on target came in the 63rd minute when Waseem Razeek’s header from inside the area was saved by Maldivian goalkeeper Mohamed Faisal. Maldives took the lead in the 67th minute. This goal was scored by Naiz Hassan (Dhaadhu). He capitalized on a rebound after a header by Feydhoo Ibbe hit the crossbar.
Later, in the 84th minute, Sri Lanka had a good opportunity to equalize from a corner, but Gareth Kelly’s header missed the target. In added time, Oliver Kellett’s powerful shot from inside the area was skillfully saved by Maldivian keeper Faisal. However, in the second minute of the five minutes of added time, Sri Lanka managed to equalize. Kellett scored this goal for his team from an opportunity inside the area. With this result, Maldives won the South Asian Super Cup, and these two matches in the tournament were the first games for the Maldivian national team since Mohamed Shiyaz (Mohan) took over as the national team coach.
