
Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel has assured that the Maldives will move forward steadily in its efforts to promote and protect human rights. Speaking at the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council currently underway in Geneva, Switzerland, Khaleel said that this government will work to protect the international human rights treaties that the Maldives has agreed to and the human rights of all citizens. He also highlighted the work done by the Maldives as a member state of the Council on human rights. In this regard, he noted the Maldives’ leading role in establishing a Voluntary Trust Fund to facilitate the participation of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the Council’s work, and in gaining global recognition that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a human right.
In his speech, the Minister highlighted the work being done by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government to promote and protect human rights. He also spoke about the government’s emphasis on social issues such as gender equality, adequate housing, increasing the inclusion of people with disabilities in society, and mitigating the negative impacts of climate change on the environment and its inhabitants.
Furthermore, the Minister expressed concern in his speech about the losses and lives lost due to the inhumane attacks by Israel on the Palestinian people. He also highlighted the long-standing relationship between Palestine and the Maldives.
