The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has officially announced its decision to host an international football tournament in the Maldives this coming June.
This decision was finalized during the ninth meeting of the association’s Executive Committee held today. According to the FAM, the tournament is scheduled to take place in Malé from June 1st to June 10th.
The competition, titled the ‘Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament’, is organized to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the introduction of official football in the Maldives.
Invitations to participate in the tournament are being extended to the national teams of neighboring Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Reports from Sri Lankan media indicate that the country has already decided to accept the invitation.
It is noteworthy that a similar event was held to mark 50 years of Maldivian football. The ‘Golden Jubilee Tournament’ held in the year 2000 featured Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India. In the final of that tournament, Sri Lanka secured a victory over the Maldives in a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 1-1 draw during regular time.
In addition to the international invitational tournament celebrating the 75th anniversary, the FAM has also decided to conduct an Under-19 football tournament.
Scheduled to be held from February 7th to 15th, invitations for this youth competition will be extended to CHSE-Male’, CHSE-Hulhumale’, Ahmadhiyya International School, and Villa International High School.
