The Maldives maintains close friendly relations with many countries in the international community. Despite being a small nation, its strong foreign policy is recognized worldwide. The relationship with neighboring countries, especially Sri Lanka, is particularly noteworthy.

As diplomatic relations between the Maldives and neighboring Sri Lanka mark 60 years this year, the connection between the two countries dates back much further. Sri Lanka is even linked to one of the Maldives’ most proudly celebrated days – Independence Day.

When the Maldives gained independence from British protection on July 26, 1965, the agreement was signed in Sri Lanka. Even before that, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) was a country familiar to and connected with Maldivians. Maldivians have always traveled there for various purposes, including royalty, their families, and other prominent figures. Evidence of this can still be seen in the graves of Maldivian dignitaries in Sri Lankan cemeteries.

Some describe the Maldives-Sri Lanka relationship as being as close as their own home. Many Maldivians have relocated to Sri Lanka. Every Maldivian who visits feels a sense of belonging in the capital, Colombo.

The number of people traveling for higher education and medical purposes is also significant. Sri Lanka has provided many higher education opportunities for Maldivians. It has also arranged medical treatments under the Aasandha scheme for Maldivians living there and those traveling for medical care, offering treatments unavailable in the Maldives.

Sri Lanka is also an important partner in the Maldivian economy. It exports a large amount of food and construction materials to the Maldives. As the Maldives relies heavily on imports, agreements between the two countries facilitate easier importation of goods from Sri Lanka.

The long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka is based on mutual respect. Both countries aim to strengthen bilateral relations in various sectors, regardless of who is in power, without affecting the overall relationship between the two nations.

The Maldives always prioritizes the Maldivian nation and its people in strengthening foreign relations. Every country that has established close friendly relations with the Maldives respects this policy. Neighboring Sri Lanka is no exception to this approach.
