The Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has been officially invited by Sri Lanka to play two friendly matches next month.
However, the Maldives national football authority has not yet made a decision regarding this proposal.
Lanka has proposed to play two friendly matches between the 1st and 9th of next month. The team that wins these two matches will also receive a competition trophy. Lanka had previously worked to organize a short tournament between three countries, including Maldives and Bhutan, during this period. This was in preparation for Lanka’s matches in the Asian Cup qualifiers.
“We have now sent an invitation to the Maldives. We will start preparing for this match very soon. The Maldives has verbally given the green light to play these two matches,” a senior official of the Lanka Football Federation said.
Maldives and Lanka are two very competitive countries in football. The last time these two countries met, Maldives won 1-0.
The SAFF Championship football tournament couldn’t be held in Lanka this year because the main sponsors of the tournament pushed for it to be held on a home and away basis. Also, countries like India started saying that Lanka doesn’t have good enough facilities to host a tournament involving seven SAARC countries.
