The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, has emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding the sovereignty of small nations within the framework of the international system.
The Minister made these remarks while addressing the Extraordinary Meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, convened following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Dr. Abdulla Khaleel participated in the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held today in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The primary objective of this meeting was to deliberate on Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland’s independence.
In his statement, Minister Dr. Khaleel asserted that Israel’s decision is a direct violation of international norms and an infringement upon the independence and territorial integrity of Somalia. Expressing the Maldivian government’s deep concern over such actions, he further noted that this move stands in direct contradiction to the United Nations Charter.
Furthermore, highlighting the current situation in the Middle East, Dr. Khaleel expressed grave concern over Israel’s ongoing disregard for international law, particularly amidst the escalation of its atrocities in Palestinian territories. He strongly condemned Israel’s continued violations of international legal standards, especially at a time when the global community is urgently calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Foreign Minister also underscored that the weakening of the international legal order poses a significant threat to the safety and security of small nations like the Maldives, which rely heavily on the consistent application of international principles.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising 57 member states, remains a steadfast advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people and works to address the challenges facing the Muslim Ummah. Since becoming a member in 1976, the Maldives has continued to play an active and prominent role within the organization.
