German’s Bayer Leverkusen has decided to give the coaching position to Erik ten Hag. The 55-year-old coach last coached England’s Manchester United. He was dismissed from that club’s coaching position in October of last year. Ten Hag, who also did good work at Ajax in the Netherlands, was of interest to Leverkusen because their current coach, Spain’s Xabi Alonso, will be leaving the team after this season. He will be taking over his former club Real Madrid.
Ten Hag will be given Leverkusen’s coaching position for a period of two years. German newspapers also say that after discussions with him, all that remains is for both parties to sign the agreement. However, German media have now begun to say that this agreement will be signed earlier this week. Before giving the coaching position to Ten Hag, Leverkusen also consulted with some other coaches. This includes Spain’s former midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who has been coaching in Italy.
The highest point of Ten Hag’s coaching career is winning the Dutch league three times for Ajax in the Netherlands. After that, he also won the English FA Cup and League Cup for United. Alonso is leaving Leverkusen after winning the German league for the team last season. And this year, that team is finishing the league in second place. Therefore, Ten Hag will be forced to improve results in the coming season.
