The Minister of State for the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Dr. Mohamed Kinanath, announced that the government is actively working on drafting and submitting several technology-related laws to the Parliament, including those concerning Maldives 2.0 and data protection. These remarks were made during the inauguration ceremony of the Maldives Police Service application.
The Maldives 2.0 digital transformation policy, unveiled by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aims to establish a digital identity, fortify cybersecurity, and integrate various government agency portals and applications. Dr. Kinanath highlighted that a significant challenge currently faced is the lack of interconnectedness among different institutional systems. However, he emphasized the critical importance of accelerating service delivery and enabling data-driven decision-making once efficient information exchange is established.
Underscoring the necessity for numerous technology-related legislative frameworks in the Maldives, Dr. Kinanath stated that the draft laws for Cybersecurity and Data Protection have already been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office. Additionally, he confirmed that work is progressing on developing new laws for Digital ID, Maldives 2.0, and Artificial Intelligence. The government anticipates that the three-year “Maldives 2.0” project, launched by the President in May of this year, will pave the way for smarter governance, faster service provision, the eradication of corruption, and enhanced transparency through technological transformation.
