
Electricity service providers have stated that last month’s electricity bills will be charged at the new tariff rates set by the government. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to reduce electricity tariff rates starting from this month on May 30th. In a post shared on social media regarding this matter, STELCO said that in accordance with the President’s decision, May’s electricity bills have been prepared using the reduced tariff rates. STELCO also noted that with this change, the amount people spend on paying electricity bills will decrease. STELCO has also assured that all future electricity bills will be prepared using the new tariff rates.
Fenaka Corporation, which provides electricity services to many islands in the atolls, said that for those who have already paid their May bills, the difference will be deducted from their June bills. For those who haven’t paid their May bills yet, new bills will be generated at the reduced tariff rates, the company said.
Changes to electricity tariff rates:
Band 0-100: From 1.50 rufiyaa to 1.25 rufiyaa
Band 101-200: From 1.70 rufiyaa to 1.50 rufiyaa
Band 201-300: From 2.15 rufiyaa to 1.50 rufiyaa
Band 301-400: From 2.50 rufiyaa to 1.50 rufiyaa
Band 401-500: From 2.95 rufiyaa to 2.66 rufiyaa
Band 501-600: From 3.55 rufiyaa to 3.20 rufiyaa
Bands above 600: From 4.25 rufiyaa to 3.83 rufiyaa
The President’s decision to reduce electricity tariff rates for households comes at a time when many people have been expressing concerns about high electricity bills.
