A historic dive site has been opened in the Kudagiri lagoon by sinking two Dornier 2 aircraft, which were the first to be used in the Maldivian aviation industry during the Air Maldives era. This dive wreck has been named “Kudagiri Dhooniya Wreck”.

As part of the government’s efforts to take Maldivian tourism to the next level, MMPR, HDC, and MTCC have jointly developed and now opened this dive site. The dive wreck site, created by sinking two Dornier 228 aircraft used by the then Air Maldives to start the aviation industry in the Maldives, is called “Dhooniya Wreck”.

HDC stated that this name was given because the site was developed by sinking two historically significant vessels for the Maldives, and since these two aircraft mark the beginning of the Maldivian aviation industry, the name refers to birds to symbolize flight.

HDC said that to further develop this site as an interesting place for tourists and visitors, the company plans to carry out coral planting work at the site. HDC also mentioned that they will be responsible for maintaining this area developed in the Kudagiri lagoon. The Tourism and Environment Minister Tariq Ibrahim, HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel, and senior officials from Ooredoo Maldives participated in the event held to open this site.

Relevant government agencies are continuously working on further developing the tourism industry and promoting the Maldives. The government’s target is to bring 2.3 million tourists to the Maldives this year.
