Islands return to normal state after floodwaters recede

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that all islands affected by flooding due to heavy rains last Friday have now returned to their normal state as floodwaters have receded.

While various islands suffered different levels of damage due to the adverse weather, 774 locations in Male’ reported requests for assistance due to flooding caused by the heavy rain. Additionally, R. Inguraidhoo and Sh. Maroshi experienced storm surges that caused varying degrees of damage. Other islands also reported different levels of damage.

Providing the latest update on the damage caused by the heavy rain, NDMA stated that F. Nilandhoo and K. Hinmafushi suffered the most significant damage. About 80% of Nilandhoo and 60% of Hinmafushi were flooded. NDMA also reported that 60 houses in K. Guraidhoo suffered various levels of damage. According to NDMA, floodwaters have now receded in all affected islands. They also stated that people who had evacuated their homes have now returned.

While Male’ experienced flooding due to the heavy rain with many reporting requests for assistance, 554 locations requested sandbags. According to information from MNDF, 30,569 tons of water have been drained from the streets of Male’, and the situation has now returned to normal.
