Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has cautioned that any military strike by the United States against Iran would ignite instability across other nations and escalate into a major regional confrontation.

This warning comes as a substantial U.S. naval strike group, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, operates near Iran following President Donald Trump’s assertions that military action against the Islamic Republic remains a possibility.

Khamenei dismissed the notion that surrounding Iran with warships could serve as an effective means of intimidation, calling such beliefs a “delusion.” He further emphasized that while Iran does not seek to initiate hostilities with any nation, it remains fully prepared and will not hesitate to defend itself.

Despite the heightened military posturing, both sides have indicated that diplomatic efforts are underway to resolve differences and avoid a direct armed conflict.

Speaking to reporters on January 31st, President Trump noted that Tehran is communicating with Washington “very seriously.” He maintained that Iran must abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions and reach a new agreement with the United States. Although he expressed skepticism about Iran’s willingness to comply, he reiterated, “But they [Iran] are talking to us. They are talking very seriously.”

Ali Larijani, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, also confirmed that Tehran is preparing to engage in discussions with the United States. “Contrary to the war rhetoric propagated in the media, the process of establishing a framework for negotiations is progressing,” Larijani stated, though he withheld further specific details.

President Trump’s recent warnings of potential intervention followed widespread anti-government protests in Iran. Reports of a violent crackdown on demonstrators prompted Trump to state that the United States would intervene in Iran’s internal affairs if the killing of protesters did not cease. Since these warnings, the situation in Iran has reportedly de-escalated, with the intensity of the protests subsiding.

In response, Khamenei characterized the civil unrest as an attempted coup orchestrated by the United States to undermine the Iranian government.
