Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed new officials to high-ranking positions in the Iranian military and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These appointments come after senior commanders of the military and IRGC were killed in terrorist attacks by Israeli forces.
Among those killed in the Israeli air strikes that began on the night of June 13 were Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the head of Iran’s military, General Hossein Salami, the senior commander of the IRGC, and General Gholam Ali Rashid, the head of Iran’s military headquarters. Khamenei has appointed Mohammad Baghroori to replace General Salami’s position, and Abdulrahim Mousavi to replace Bagheri’s position. Baghroori and Mousavi will play key roles in planning and implementing Iran’s retaliatory measures against the ongoing Israeli attacks.
General Salami, who was killed in the Israeli attacks, was a key figure in coordinating Iran’s defense matters and was a senior advisor to Khamenei on military policies related to regional countries. He was a powerful figure who reported directly to Khamenei.
The new appointments are aimed at filling the leadership vacuum created by the Israeli attacks and ensuring continuity in Iran’s military command structure as the country prepares its response to the Israeli aggression.
