A regulation has been formulated and implemented to allow installment payments for outstanding annual fees and fines owed to the state by owners of land and sea vehicles. The regulation for installment payments of annual fees and fines related to land and sea vehicles has been published in the Government Gazette today. Under this regulation, everyone has the opportunity to pay in installments any outstanding annual fees and fines owed to the state for land and sea vehicles that are required to be paid once a year.

Following the gazetting of this regulation, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has thanked President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. In a post on “X”, Ameen stated that President Dr. Muizzu’s vision is to find the easiest and most convenient ways for the people in every matter. The regulation states that if certain conditions are met, those who request will be given the opportunity to pay the outstanding money owed to the state in installments as per the regulation. These conditions include: the amount of unpaid dues exceeding MVR 10,000, the money being past the payment deadline, submitting a request to pay in installments under the regulation, not having been previously given the opportunity to pay in installments, and the applicant being the owner of the vehicle.

According to the regulation, requests for installment payments should be submitted to the Ministry using a designated form. If an application does not meet the conditions, the applicant must be informed in writing within a maximum of seven days. The regulation states that if a commitment fee is paid, an agreement must be drawn up between the applicant and the Ministry for installment payments. This agreement must include details such as the duration of the agreement, payment schedule, procedures for handling any additional fees or fines related to the vehicle during the agreement period, and actions to be taken in case of breach of agreement.

The regulation states that the Ministry has the right to terminate the agreement if payments are not made for 30 days without a valid reason, in accordance with the agreement. Valid reasons are considered to be natural disasters or illnesses that render one unable to make the payment.
