Initiation of 50 MW Renewable Energy Projects Across 24 Islands

The Maldives is set to commence the development of over 50 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy across 24 islands under the ‘ASPIRE’ and ‘ARISE’ projects.

This initiative is part of the government’s strategic efforts to reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels and to transition towards environmentally sustainable energy production.

This project marks a significant milestone in achieving the ambitious renewable energy targets set by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The President’s vision is to ensure that 33 percent of the country’s electricity demand is met through renewable energy sources by the end of 2028.

Implemented by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the systems established under the ASPIRE and ARISE projects are expected to drastically cut government expenditure on fuel imports. According to the Ministry, this shift will facilitate more sustainable electricity services and bolster the Maldives’ commitment to global climate change mitigation efforts.

The government is actively expanding such projects throughout the archipelago to promote eco-friendly energy solutions.

In his Presidential Address at the opening of the People’s Majlis on the 5th of this month, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu highlighted that fuel imports constitute the largest portion of national expenditure. He noted that statistics show the Maldives imports diesel worth USD 443.6 million annually, a significant majority of which is utilized for electricity generation.

Furthermore, the President emphasized that such heavy dependence on diesel poses a major threat to the nation’s energy security. Consequently, the government aims to double current efforts and increase the total renewable energy capacity to 220 megawatts.
