An independent UN commission has concluded that the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza is a crime orchestrated by Israeli leaders, including the extremist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As Israel announced its ground invasion of Gaza City, the UN report cited evidence supporting the commission’s findings, including the mass killing of civilians, blocking of humanitarian aid, forced displacement of residents, and destruction of a fertility clinic. Similar accusations have been made against Israel by genocide scholars and human rights organizations.

Navi Pillay, a member of the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and former judge of the International Criminal Court, stated that we are witnessing the genocide of Gaza’s population. She emphasized that the attempt to eradicate a people is unacceptable under any circumstances, from both a human and moral perspective, and described it as a legal emergency. Pillay asserted that Israeli leaders bear full responsibility for the aggressive attacks on Gaza, which she characterized as premeditated and intentional acts aimed at genocide.

The 72-page legal analysis prepared by the UN commission is the strongest report to date on Gaza from a UN-affiliated body. However, as an independent commission, its findings are not considered an official UN stance. While the UN has not yet used the term “genocide” to describe the situation in Gaza, there is increasing pressure on the organization to declare the Israeli killings as acts of genocide.

Pillay expressed hope that UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres would read the report, acknowledge its facts, and proceed based on its findings. To determine genocide, at least one of five acts must occur. The UN commission stated that Israel is committing four of these acts in Gaza: killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about physical destruction, and imposing measures to prevent births. The commission cited evidence from victims, witnesses, doctors, documents, and satellite imagery to support these claims claims. Additionally, the report noted that statements by Israeli leaders reveal their intent to destroy the Gaza population.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed over 64,000 people, mostly innocent women and children. Gaza has been reduce has been reduced to rubble, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. Israel continues to restrict humanitarian aid and food supplies, deliberately starving Gaza’s population. Many Gazans are dying from hunger as a result.
