Important lessons for today’s generation from the Maldivians’ national effort to achieve complete independence!

The complete history of a nation’s independence is the foundation of its national identity. As the Maldives celebrates 60 years of independence, there are important lessons for today’s generation about the efforts made to break free from British protection.

Independence is the most valuable blessing that gives a country’s citizens the power to make their own decisions. The Maldives came under British protection in 1887 to save the country from a delicate economic and political situation. However, during the long period of 77 years, as efforts were made to introduce British influence in internal affairs, the desire for complete independence grew stronger in the hearts of Maldivians.

On July 26, 1965, the Maldives gained full independence. The main architect of this effort was the then Prime Minister, His Highness Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan. He and his colleagues advocated for complete independence with a very strong national spirit, without any compromises.

Independence is the main foundation for a country’s sovereignty and economic and social progress. Independence allows for the power and discretion to use the country’s resources, freedom from foreign influence, and protection of national interests. This independence is the result of the sacrifices of many Maldivian heroes.

Maintaining independence is crucial for preserving national identity. Today’s generation must make it their resolve to maintain independence by giving special importance to the foundations of nationality – Islam, the Dhivehi language, and culture – fostering patriotism, and working together as a society.
