The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has announced plans to launch a certification program within this year to identify and recognize Maldivian businesses that actively work to uphold human rights. The Commission stated that these businesses will be evaluated based on international standards. Speaking on PSM’s “Raajje Miadhu” program regarding their current initiatives, the Commission highlighted that they are presently focusing on specific sectors, with the business sector being a key priority.

To further expand their engagement with the private sector and to value the efforts of businesses in ensuring human rights, HRCM will commence the certification process this year. The Commission noted that this initiative will align with relevant United Nations standards. Furthermore, it was revealed that businesses will be categorized into three certification tiers. Hussain Jameel, Assistant Director of Advocacy at HRCM, explained that achieving this certification requires businesses to meet several rigorous criteria.

“For instance, to be classified as a business operating at a ‘Gold Standard,’ there are numerous requirements to fulfill. This specifically includes full compliance with the Employment Act, ensuring all legal rights are afforded to employees, and establishing mandatory internal committees—such as those for preventing sexual harassment and ethics committees. Additionally, there must be a robust grievance mechanism in place for employees to voice their concerns,” said Hussain Jameel. He added that the evaluation will be based on a points system that assesses the extent of a business’s commitment to human rights. The three categories for certification are Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

The Human Rights Commission emphasized that such certification would be a significant milestone for businesses. Aligning operations with international standards is seen as a valuable opportunity for business promotion. “When the National Human Rights Commission certifies and awards a business for operating at a Gold or Bronze standard, it serves as substantial proof for their suppliers and other stakeholders. Currently, businesses that champion human rights are gaining vast opportunities, and we anticipate similar benefits for our local enterprises,” Jameel stated.

HRCM further noted that promoting human rights within the business sector has been one of their top priorities throughout the past and current year. As part of this effort, scheduled awareness programs are being conducted for major businesses. The ultimate goal of this initiative, according to HRCM, is to transform Maldivian businesses into entities that operate in full accordance with international human rights standards.
