Minister of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Muththalib has stated that land given to unqualified individuals will be seized. Speaking at a press conference held today, Muththalib said that various scams are being run by different parties through the Binverin (landowner) and Gedhoruverin (homeowner) schemes. He stated that these are not in any way related to the ministry.

He said that there are talks of deliberate deception in giving plots through the Binverin scheme, and that while verifying this information, if it is found that a plot has been given to someone who already has a plot, or if someone from outside Male’ has been given a plot by pretending to be from Male’, those cases will be investigated. “Even if the plot has been registered and handed over, and even if a boundary wall has been built, if land has been given to an unqualified person, we will seize it from them. We will take that action,” Muththalib said.

The minister said that land was something that was intended to be given to the people of Male’ for a specific purpose, and if someone has obtained something by introducing corruption into that process contrary to that principle, if such an issue is identified when investigating a case, it will be seized. “We will start with the second phase of Hulhumale’. If any parties have been given [land] in this way, whether through a scam or through the ministry, if something has been given to a party not included in the announcement by deception, we will seize it. We will also seize flats if anything has been done in that manner. We don’t want to give any opportunity for scams or corruption. It’s a sensitive matter,” Muththalib said.

Muththalib said that some parties are trying to buy plot registrations through scams. He advised the public not to do such things. He said not to try to get plot registrations by paying three or four hundred thousand rufiyaa. He stated that registrations cannot be obtained in that manner.
