Former President Abdulla Yameen has clearly stated that although he previously supported implementing the death penalty, he no longer supports it now. Speaking at a PNF meeting, Yameen said that some of the Supreme Court’s rulings are not good decisions and that he does not trust the judges. Therefore, he raised the question of which president could implement Islamic punishments such as Qisas under the current judicial system.
He emphasized the importance of finding a way to make Supreme Court decisions free from political influence, trustworthy to the public, and accountable. Although preparations were made to carry out death sentences during Yameen’s presidency, and even in 2022 he stated that the quality of investigations and lack of trust in the judicial system were obstacles, his stance has now directly changed.
