
It has been decided to relocate “Hope Island”, which was planned to be built in D. Vaanee to provide treatment and rehabilitation programs for children at risk of offending, to North Thilafushi near Male’. The government has announced today, through a presidential decree, projects to be implemented under the economic and social policy for public benefit as per the Tourism Act. It includes 25 important projects planned by the government and the minimum expenditure required for these projects.
According to the decree, under the rehabilitation program, it has been decided to spend $10 million (154 million rufiyaa) to reclaim 15 hectares of land for “Hope Island”. The decree issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu today, outlining important projects to be implemented under the economic policy for public benefit, includes 4 projects planned for North Thilafushi, requiring a minimum expenditure of $55 million.
The 4 projects and their minimum required expenditure:
1. Reclaiming 15 hectares of land for Hope Island ($10,000,000)
2. Developing Hope Island ($15,000,000)
3. Reclaiming 30 hectares of land for Central Jail ($15,000,000)
4. Developing Central Jail ($15,000,000)
According to the government, Hope Island will be able to rehabilitate 400 children at a time. Minister Ali Ihsaan has previously stated that children rehabilitated there will have the opportunity to join the police or military service when they turn 18, and after a certain period, they will have the opportunity to enter their desired field.
