Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has stated that the highest priority in strengthening the Maldives Police Service will be given to maintaining public trust in the police. The Commissioner of Police said this in a special interview given to PSM News after assuming the position of Commissioner of Police. Revealing his vision for the police service, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen said that even after taking over as Acting Commissioner, the highest priority was given to maintaining public trust in the police service. In this regard, the Commissioner of Police also said that they are shaping police work by looking at the public’s concerns about their safety and security and what the police can do to address these issues.
The Commissioner of Police said that not receiving updates on cases reported to the police is a complaint received from many people, and that work is currently underway to improve this as well. The Commissioner of Police also said that police investigations will be further strengthened and matters will be arranged so that the public will be more informed about investigative matters than they are now.
“It is very important that investigations are made more known to the public than they are now. These are the challenges. Now investigative matters have become very complex. Shaping our investigations is a challenge for us. So training, retraining, and building the skills of supervisors is something we will do. And it’s something we’ve already started doing,” said Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.
The Commissioner of Police said that work is also being done to further strengthen matters in fulfilling legal responsibilities. The Commissioner of Police said that rather than starting new initiatives to strengthen the relationship between the public and the police, priority will be given to further strengthening the initiatives that have already been started. In this regard, he said that the Neighborhood Police is a successful initiative and that work will be done to further strengthen it in the future. In addition, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen said that work will be done to further strengthen the relationship with the public through technology and maintain public trust.
