The US Special Envoy, Tom Barrak, has stated that he considers Hezbollah, the militant group active in Lebanon, as an important participant that can play a significant role in Lebanon’s political arena. The efforts by the US, Israel, and Lebanese official institutions to disarm Hezbollah have been intensified. According to Barrak, the US will not pressure Hezbollah to disarm, and achieving this is the responsibility of the Lebanese government. He said this after Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, once again rejected the Lebanese government’s request to disarm.
Qassem has repeatedly stated that if Hezbollah disarms, all the benefits would go to Israel. Although the exchange of attacks between Hezbollah and the Israeli military’s terrorist soldiers was suspended last November, Israel continues to violate that agreement. They also periodically launch attacks targeting Lebanese villages and civilians. In a special interview with Al Jazeera, Barrak said that he recognizes Hezbollah as a legitimate political party. He also stated that Hezbollah would play an important role in Lebanon’s political future.
In attacks targeting Hezbollah, Israel has martyred many of the group’s senior leaders. This includes the group’s former leader Hassan Nasrallah and thousands of mujahideen affiliated with Hezbollah.
