
Continuous heavy rainfall in China’s capital Beijing has resulted in dangerous incidents causing 30 deaths. The China Meteorological Administration stated that within about a week, the amount of rainfall equivalent to a year’s worth has fallen, causing significant damage to areas of Beijing. Due to flooding, over 80,000 people have been relocated to safer areas.
Relevant Chinese authorities reported that numerous roads have suffered extensive damage due to the flooding. While some areas have experienced power outages, more than 130 villages have lost communication services. A storm in the Beijing area has also forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The rail transportation system has also been severely disrupted.
Chinese media reported that the mountainous areas near the Great Wall of China were the most affected by the rainstorm. In various incidents related to the flooding, 28 people died in Mentougou district. An additional two deaths were reported in Fangshan, according to China’s news agency, Xinhua. However, no official Chinese authorities have clarified the exact cause of these deaths. The China Meteorological Administration reported that on July 23, Mentougou received 573.5 millimeters of rainfall, causing extensive damage. Relevant Chinese authorities stated that Beijing typically receives about 600 millimeters of rainfall annually.
In addition to Beijing, China’s Hebei Province is also experiencing continuous heavy rainfall. Chinese authorities revealed that Xingtai in Hebei Province received 1,000 millimeters of rainfall within two days. Due to the severe weather and landslides, eight people have died in Hebei.
