The Hamas movement, which governs the Gaza Strip, is expected to appoint a new leader during the course of this month.
Following the martyrdom of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in 2024 amidst the ongoing aggression launched by Zionist forces against Gaza since October 7, 2023, sources indicate that the movement is preparing to appoint a successor this month. The procedural requirements for the appointment are currently being finalized. The new leader will be elected through a secret ballot cast by the members of the Hamas Shura Council, which comprises 50 representatives from Gaza, the West Bank, and other Palestinian territories.
The leading contenders for the top position are reportedly Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Meshaal, both of whom are currently based in Qatar. Both individuals are members of the five-member special committee that has been managing the movement’s affairs since the martyrdom of Sinwar.
In addition to the top leadership post, Hamas is also expected to appoint a new Deputy Leader. This position has remained vacant since the martyrdom of Saleh al-Arouri in a Zionist attack in Lebanon in 2024.
The move to appoint a new leader after the position remained vacant for over a year comes at a highly sensitive time for the movement. Hamas continues to face significant pressure to disarm following the ceasefire agreement initiated between Hamas and the Zionist entity on October 10 last year. Furthermore, the movement faces immense challenges in providing humanitarian aid to the displaced population in Gaza and in the efforts to reconstruct the war-torn territory.
