Haibat al-Halbousi has been elected as the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament. His election took place during the inaugural session of the legislature following the national elections held last November.

According to a statement released by the Iraqi Parliament, Al-Halbousi secured 208 out of the 283 votes cast. The Speaker’s role is pivotal in maintaining legislative order, resolving parliamentary disputes, and fostering consensus within Iraq’s often fragmented political landscape.

Under the Iraqi Constitution, the Speaker and Deputy Speakers must be elected during the opening session of Parliament. Following this, a President must be appointed within 30 days. The newly appointed President will then task the largest parliamentary bloc with the responsibility of forming a government.

In the parliamentary elections, the majority of seats were secured by candidates affiliated with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani.
