The Maldivian government is taking proactive measures to minimize the potential negative impact on the tourism industry following the escalating tensions in the Middle East. Highlighting the situation, Minister Thariq Ibrahim stated that since approximately 35% of tourists travel to the Maldives via Middle Eastern transit hubs, any disruptions to the region’s aviation sector would have a direct impact on the country.

To counter these challenges, the government is working to increase the number of direct flights to the Maldives that do not require transit in the Middle East. Priority is being given to expanding direct connectivity from key markets, including China, India, and Europe. Furthermore, the Minister noted that the government is collaborating closely with airlines to provide necessary assistance to tourists who may face travel difficulties or find themselves stranded due to the current situation.
