President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the administration’s policy is to elevate the role of sports in ensuring a healthy lifestyle for the Maldivian people.

Delivering the Presidential Address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis for this year, the President stated that the primary focus of preventive healthcare policies must be on addressing lifestyle-related diseases and fostering a physically fit population.

“In implementing disease prevention policies, utmost priority must be given to protecting citizens from lifestyle-related diseases and nurturing a healthy, physically fit society. To achieve this, the government believes that the development of the sports and fitness sector is of paramount importance,” the President remarked, highlighting the administration’s commitment to sports as a pillar of public health.

The President further elaborated on the government’s perspective regarding the necessity of developing the sports and fitness sector to reach these goals. He shared details of the significant milestones achieved and the strategic initiatives planned by the administration.

In this regard, the President revealed that the practical works of 33 projects initiated by this administration within this sector were completed last year. Additionally, he noted that 59 projects that remained unfinished when the current administration took office were also completed within the past year.

Consequently, a total of 92 projects in the field of sports and physical fitness were successfully concluded last year. Furthermore, the President highlighted that 879 sports and fitness projects initiated by this administration are currently underway across various regions of the country.

During his Presidential Address, he assured that all these ongoing projects are scheduled to be completed and handed over within the next 12 months.

It is noteworthy that the current administration is focused on decentralizing sports facilities, ensuring they are accessible across the Maldives rather than being concentrated solely in the Greater Malé Area.

To support this objective, the government has launched numerous projects to establish multipurpose sports complexes, outdoor gyms, and fitness and recreation centers throughout the islands.
