The government has implemented strategic measures to stabilize market prices and prevent inflation during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. In this regard, arrangements have been made through the State Trading Organization (STO) to ensure the continuous availability of 23 additional varieties of goods, expanding beyond the three traditional staples. Furthermore, efforts are underway via STO agents to guarantee that these essential items are accessible at affordable prices across all islands of the Maldives.
In addition to these measures, the government is actively monitoring the daily prices of 162 different commodities to track market fluctuations. The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, emphasized that these actions do not aim to obstruct free trade. Instead, he noted that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure that essential goods remain affordable for the public. The primary objective is to maintain stable wholesale prices, thereby providing relief to both small businesses and the general public.
