Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he has not communicated with the Chief Justice regarding a case submitted to the Supreme Court. He said this in a statement issued in response to a news article published by a Maldivian mediaian media outlet claiming that the Chief Justice had called President Nasheed to discuss a case submitted to the Supreme Court. In a statement released by President Nasheed’s office, he said that the news published by a media outlet claiming that he had communicated with Chief Justice Uz. Muthasim Adnan regarding a case submitted to the Supreme Court is false. He also stated that all the information in that news article is “completely false from A to Z”.
President Nasheed said that the Chief Justice is a person whose integrity has never been questioned. He also said that there is no doubt that he is a person who will carry out his official responsibilities with honesty and trustworthiness. He said that this was the reason why he appointed him to the position of Chief Justice. According to allegations made by a Maldivian newspaper, when the case of the constitutional amendment that would result in MPs losing their seats was submitted to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court Registrar Raufa Haidar decided not to accept the case, and when this was informed to the Chief Justice, he called President Nasheed and told him about it. Along with this, the newspaper has also reported that a case has been submitted to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) claiming that President Nasheed told the Chief Justice that the case should be accepted.
In a post shared on social media regarding this matter, President Nasheed has called for an end to the spread of such grave, seditious false stories.”
