Addressing the challenges faced by the fisheries industry is a top priority for this government. In this regard, the establishment of ice plants to resolve the difficulties faced by fishermen in obtaining ice is noteworthy. Having to travel long distances to acquire ice is a significant concern for fishermen. Therefore, the government has commenced efforts to establish ice plants in additional regions.
Within the first two years of this government, 5 ice plants have been established and completed. The storage capacity of these 5 ice plants reaches 280 tons, and they produce 165 tons of ice.
Ice plants commenced and brought into operation by this government:
- Ga. Gemanafushi – Production: 50 tons / Storage Capacity: 100 tons
- Ga. Dhevvadhoo – Production: 25 tons / Storage Capacity: 30 tons
- Sh. Funadhoo – Production: 30 tons / Storage Capacity: 50 tons
- Dh. Meedhoo – Production: 30 tons / Storage Capacity: 50 tons
- Dh. Bandidhoo – Production: 30 tons / Storage Capacity: 50 tons
While 5 ice plants have been brought into operation, the government is also working on additional ice plants. Currently, work has begun and is progressing on 6 more ice plants. Furthermore, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources stated that it has been decided to construct 8 additional ice plants.
Speaking at the ceremony held to mark two years of the government, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that when this government took office, many ice plants were dilapidated. However, the government is working to repair these ice plants. “Looking at the ice plants, they were in disrepair. Nevertheless, many ice plants have been repaired, many have been built, and we have now opened ice plants in 4 new islands. In addition to that, R.S.W. systems have now been installed in many fishing vessels,” the President said.
Ice plants are a means for fishermen to deliver fresh fish to the market. The demand for ice plants is particularly high during the fishing season. If there is no island nearby where ice can be obtained, having to travel far also increases fuel expenses.
