For the first time in the Maldives’ history, a specialized DNA laboratory for comprehensive thalassemia testing has been established and inaugurated at the Maldives Blood Services. This significant milestone is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to expanding and enhancing treatment for thalassemia.

Developed with a state investment of MVR 2.5 million, the newly established laboratory utilizes automated technology to perform various advanced tests that previously required samples to be sent abroad. The facility is equipped to identify 27 different types of hemoglobin mutations and determine genetic inheritance patterns, while also providing critical services such as prenatal diagnosis.

This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to strengthen thalassemia care. Other ongoing efforts include expanding opportunities for free bone marrow transplants, providing a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000 to children with thalassemia starting this year, and the decision to begin construction of a specialized hospital dedicated to thalassemia treatment in the near future.
