The President of FIFA, the world’s main football governing body, has praised the work of Ahmed Tariq (Tom), President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM). In a post shared on Instagram, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that he had recently met with the FAM President and discussed the development of football. He also mentioned that they had deliberated on ways to bring the sport closer to supporters while working on advancing football in the Maldives.
Commending the efforts of FAM President Tariq and the new executive committee, Infantino said that since his election as President in July this year, Tariq has been working with great care, drawing from his experience as a former player.
Infantino also noted that the Maldives had won a trophy in an international football tournament after 7 years. Referring to the recently concluded South Asian Super Cup, he highlighted this achievement under Tariq’s leadership. Additionally, he mentioned efforts to promote women’s football and plans for a women’s football tournament later this year. Infantino stated that these developments indicate a change in direction for the future of Maldivian football, and that there’s renewed enthusiasm for collectively collectively reshaping football in the Maldives.
The new management of FAM has been fully cooperating with FIFA’s efforts to strengthen the Maldivian football organization. Reviving the lost fervor for football in the Maldives, improving the standards of national teams, and bringing football back to a good level are important visions of the new President Tariq. In this regard, advancing women’s football and football in the atolls are also given high priority.
