F. Atoll Education Centre has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Zayed Sustainability Prize in the Global High Schools (South Asia) category. This international accolade, established in memory of the UAE’s founding father, was awarded to the school for its innovative and eco-friendly model that integrates renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture.
Competing against 18 other schools, the project was inspired by a previous initiative at Addu High School. The primary objectives of this model are to significantly reduce the school’s electricity costs, generate income by selling surplus energy, and eventually facilitate the air-conditioning of the entire school premises.
Furthermore, the project aims to minimize carbon emissions while extending its benefits to the wider community. Plans are underway to provide clean energy and water to the local hospital and to expand sustainable farming practices. With the USD 150,000 prize money, the school intends to further develop this exemplary project, aspiring to create a positive environmental and social impact that resonates across the entire Maldives.
