Five European nations have leveled serious accusations against Russia, alleging that opposition leader Alexei Navalny was assassinated using a lethal toxin. Navalny passed away approximately two years ago while serving a sentence in a Russian prison. While these five European countries maintain that a dangerous poison was utilized in his death, Russia has categorically denied these allegations, characterizing them as Western propaganda.

The five nations implicating Russia in Navalny’s death are the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands. These countries stated that scientific research conducted by their experts reveals that a toxin derived from a species of frog native to South American jungles was used to kill Navalny. Furthermore, they claim that traces of a toxic substance known as ‘Epibatidine’ were discovered in samples taken from his body. They emphasized that this substance is not naturally found within Russia. In response to these allegations, the Russian government asserted that it had no involvement in Navalny’s death. According to Russian state media, the government has dismissed these claims as “Western propaganda” and “deception.” Additionally, the Russian Embassy in London questioned whether anyone would believe such baseless narratives surrounding a person’s death.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Western powers are spreading unfounded stories linking Russia to Navalny’s death in an attempt to deflect public attention from their own internal issues. Navalny passed away in February 2024. Moscow maintains that his death was due to natural causes.
