Reports indicate that the Cuban people are facing immense challenges and suffering as a result of stringent US sanctions, which have led to severe shortages of food, fuel, and essential services.
Speaking to Reuters, numerous citizens reported frequent power outages across many regions due to fuel shortages. Furthermore, they highlighted that food prices have soared beyond the reach of the general public.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the cessation of fuel supplies from Venezuela. This follows the recent military intervention in Venezuela by US forces and the subsequent detention of President Nicolas Maduro.
In addition to Venezuela, Mexico has also suspended fuel supplies to Cuba following threats from US President Donald Trump to impose heavy duties on any country providing fuel to the island nation.
Under the weight of these intensified sanctions, the value of the Cuban Peso has plummeted by an additional 10 percent within the last three weeks. This devaluation has caused food prices to rise disproportionately to the people’s income.
The fuel crisis has also severely disrupted the transportation network, making it increasingly difficult to maintain public transport and taxi services.
International organizations have warned that the scarcity of food and basic services is pushing Cuba toward a potential humanitarian catastrophe.
The current atmosphere remains tense following the 2021 mass protests against the Cuban government, which were suppressed by police force. Those clashes resulted in one fatality, numerous injuries, and the arrest and imprisonment of over 700 individuals.
Since then, the Cuban government has strictly curtailed anti-government activities. Consequently, despite the dire deterioration of living conditions, the public has yet to take to the streets in further protest.
