To address the unique challenges of providing healthcare across the Maldivian archipelago, the government is establishing a robust framework through the “Maldives National Ambulance Service.” To strengthen patient transportation across land, sea, and air, 56 new ambulances have been dispatched to various islands to date, with ongoing efforts to procure additional ambulances and paramedic vehicles.
Plans are underway to add 12 more vessels to the sea ambulance fleet this year. Furthermore, the Air Ambulance service has been launched and is currently operational with trained medical personnel. To further expand this service, helicopter operations are scheduled to commence within this year. This initiative will significantly facilitate the transfer of patients from islands without airports and during adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the government is collaborating with several foreign countries to facilitate international patient transfers via air ambulance. These developments represent a revolutionary transformation in the healthcare system of the Maldives.
