England wins the trophy by defeating Spain on penalties

England has defended their European Football Championship title by defeating the world champions Spain 3-1 on penalties.

The match, played in Switzerland, ended 1-1 after full time and 30 minutes of extra time. The first goal of the match was scored in the 25th minute by Spain’s María Caldentey, who plays for the English club Arsenal. England’s equalizer came from Arsenal forward Alessia Russo.

In the penalty shootout, Spain only managed to score their first penalty. Pina Guijarro successfully converted her penalty, but Caldentey and Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí, the world’s best player for the past two years, saw their penalties saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Subsequently, Barcelona forward Salma Paralluelo’s penalty went wide.

For the English team, Mead and captain Leah Williamson’s penalties were saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Cata Coll. However, Greenwood, Charles, and Chloe Kelly successfully converted their penalties.

English supporters and players view this as a significant victory, especially after the heartbreak of losing to Spain in the World Cup football tournament two years ago.

Speaking after the match, England goalkeeper Hampton said this victory was the result of long-term hard work.

“We’re all so happy today. We’ve worked so hard for this moment to celebrate today. This is such a joyous moment,” the goalkeeper said.
