England’s coach, Thomas Tuchel, has stated that the national team has been drawn into a challenging group for next year’s FIFA World Cup.
During the official draw ceremony held last night in Washington D.C., England was placed in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. England’s first match of the tournament is scheduled for June 17th of next year, against Croatia.
Croatia notably defeated England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, subsequently advancing to the final of that tournament.
Following the draw, England’s coach Thomas Tuchel remarked that it is indeed a difficult group. He highlighted that Croatia and Ghana are not new to the World Cup stage and possess significant experience. While admitting he has limited information on Panama, he affirmed that his team would conduct thorough research on them in the coming period.
“Ghana and Croatia are teams that have previously competed in the World Cup, and facing such teams in this tournament is never an easy task,” Tuchel stated.
He further added, “My experience with group stage matches in a major football tournament is primarily from the UEFA Champions League. Therefore, we will approach this challenge with utmost respect for our opponents, aiming to secure the top spot in the group.”
England secured their spot in next year’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, with an impressive qualifying record. They remained undefeated throughout their qualifying campaign and did not concede a single goal.
This upcoming tournament marks a significant change, as it will be the first time the World Cup is held with an expanded format featuring a total of 48 competing teams.
