Billionaire Elon Musk, who was tasked with reducing government spending by US President Donald Trump’s administration, has announced his departure from the government as his term comes to an end. Musk made this announcement after taking charge of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), laying off many employees, abolishing numerous agencies, and taking several steps to downsize them. Classified as a “special government employee,” he was allowed to work as a government employee for 130 days a year. That number will be reached before the end of May, starting from January 20th when Trump was sworn in.
Musk thanked Trump for his assistance in a post on X. He also expressed hope that the cost-cutting agency’s principles would become the general norm for the government. “As my time as a special government employee comes to an end, I want to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X. A White House official told the news outlet Semafor that the process of Musk’s departure as a special government employee will begin on Wednesday night.
Before leaving the government, Musk had publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the government passing a law that increases government spending and debt, negating the work done by DOGE.
