Disagreement Over Sanctions Relief Amid Iran Nuclear Talks

Iran has reported a significant deadlock in its ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States, specifically regarding the terms of sanctions relief. The two nations initiated a new round of high-level talks earlier this month, having recently concluded the second session. A third round of discussions is scheduled for early March. A senior Iranian government spokesperson noted that the U.S. perspective on easing sanctions remains fundamentally different from the conditions set by Iran. The official emphasized the necessity of a mutually agreed-upon timetable for lifting sanctions, asserting that any roadmap must be equitable and serve the national interests of both countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran will soon present a set of counter-proposals to the U.S. overtures. These developments occur as U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of military action against Iran. The United States maintains its demand that Iran completely cease all uranium enrichment activities, viewing such processes as a direct path toward the development of nuclear weapons. While Iran has signaled a willingness to negotiate an agreement, it continues to maintain that it has no intention of pursuing nuclear weaponry. Tehran consistently demands recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.

Furthermore, the United States has conditioned any deal on the removal of Iran’s existing stockpiles of enriched uranium from the country. The Iranian official indicated that while Tehran might consider exporting a portion of its enriched uranium, this would only be in exchange for the formal recognition of its right to maintain a peaceful nuclear program. Despite the current impasse, the official expressed optimism regarding the potential for a future settlement. Iran contends that a comprehensive agreement would yield economic benefits for both nations. Under the economic framework currently being discussed, Iran suggested that the U.S. could have opportunities to invest in the Iranian oil sector. However, Tehran clarified that it will not relinquish control over its oil and mineral resources, noting that the only path forward for the U.S. is to engage as an economic partner.
