A dinghy carrying a large number of refugees capsized on its way to Spain’s Canary Islands, resulting in several deaths. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Service reported that a small dinghy carrying many people was heading towards El Hierro, an island in the Canary Islands. The service stated that despite the vessel’s small size, it was overcrowded with passengers. It is estimated that there were over 100 people on board. The Maritime Rescue Service said that they first became aware of the boat when it was about six miles offshore.
According to available information, the dinghy capsized and overturned as the Maritime Rescue Service was attempting to evacuate those under 18 years of age when the vessel approached the shore. The service reported that the boat suddenly tipped over when the passengers rushed to one side. As the boat capsized, the passengers fell into the sea. The agency reported that four women, a teenage girl, and two younger girls drowned in the incident. Two other children were airlifted to a hospital in El Hierro for treatment, according to the agency. It is reported that their condition is critical due to the drowning. Red Cross spokespersond Cross spokesperson Alexis Ramos said that while it is believed there were over 100 people on board, it is unclear how many are currently missing.
The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, is a major route for refugees and migrants. Many refugees and migrants, hoping to reach Europe, undertake long and perilous journeys across the sea in small dinghies and rubber boats that are unsuitable for such voyages, often overcrowded and risking their lives. Thousands of people have died attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to reach European territory. Last year alone, about 47,000 people crossed the Atlantic to reach the Canary Islands. Most of them were from Mali, Senegal, and Morocco. Many people board dinghies in Mauritania to travel to Europe. Among those who come to Europe this way are thousands of unaccompanied minors.
