Minister of Defence, Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, has stated that the infrastructure development projects scheduled to commence this year at Kalhuthukkala Koshi will bring substantial improvements to military accommodation and administrative operations. The Minister noted that since the year 2000, there has been a lack of adequate maintenance and renovation of military facilities, resulting in the current infrastructure falling below the desired standards. This project is specifically designed to address the housing difficulties faced by military personnel stationed in Malé.
In addition to the developments in Malé, projects to enhance accommodation and resources across various Area Commands in the atolls will proceed throughout this year and the next. These initiatives will be carried out under the supervision of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Military Engineers, ensuring they are economically viable, modern, and do not impose an undue financial burden on the state. Furthermore, plans are underway to modernise military training facilities, including the reclamation and development of Girifushi and the further expansion of the training centre in Addu City.
