An Iranian government official has reported that approximately 2,000 people have lost their lives in the violent clashes associated with the ongoing anti-government protests in Iran.
Speaking to Reuters, the official noted that the casualties include members of the national security forces. He further alleged that these fatalities were orchestrated by terrorist elements who have infiltrated the demonstrations to launch attacks against both protesters and security personnel.
The unrest, sparked by public outrage over skyrocketing inflation and the rising cost of living, began late last month. As the demonstrations have spread across various regions of the country, the Iranian government has implemented widespread internet shutdowns in several areas.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly issued warnings to the Iranian leadership, stating that the United States would intervene in defense of the protesters if excessive force is used to suppress the movement.
In a further escalation of pressure, President Trump warned yesterday that a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on goods imported to the U.S. from any country that maintains trade relations with Iran. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from global powers, including China and Russia.
In response, the Iranian government has accused the United States of attempting to interfere in its internal affairs. Tehran maintains that foreign powers are exploiting the domestic protests to achieve their own political agendas. Furthermore, Iranian authorities have claimed that the involvement of the United States in the crisis is the primary cause of the fatalities occurring during the protests.
