The Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Ahmed Nazim, has made serious corruption allegations against Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Dawood. This was revealed during a sub-committee meeting of the Parliament’s Public Finance Committee.
According to a report presented by Nazim, unaccounted money was deposited into the accounts of Dawood and some of his family members in 2023 and 2024. While police officers are prohibited from engaging in business, Dawood does not have any registered business. Additionally, Nazim stated that Dawood is also mentioned in the Asset Recovery Commission’s report related to the MMPRC corruption case. Based on information from whistleblowers, Nazim claimed that Dawood and businessman Hassan Taufeeq jointly made a real estate investment of 10.5 million rufiyaa under their wives’ names. He also alleged that a 4.1 million rufiyaa apartment was purchased in 10 cash installments.
Responding to Nazim’s statements, Dawood’s legal team said these were false claims. They assured that no unaccounted money had been deposited into Dawood’s account and that he had not engaged in any illegal transactions. They stated that investigations would prove Dawood had not received any money from the MMPRC case, and with previous Police Board decisions overturned by the court, there was no room to question Dawood’s integrity. The lawyers also noted that it was irresponsible to make unsubstantiated claims in a parliamentary committee without giving the accused a chance to respond.
As these allegations were made against Dawood, it is reported that he has gone on leave starting today, and Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed (Twofo) has temporarily taken charge of Hulhumale’ Police. However, it is unclear whether any action has been taken against Dawood yet.
